Wavertree Athletics Centre

Athletics Track Refurbishment

As part of Liverpool’s bid to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games, CLS Sports were appointed to reconstruct the Wavertree Athletics Facility into a centre fit for regional, national and international competition.

The project involved the replacement of the existing 8-lane 400m track with a non-porous sandwich system. The sandwich system comprised of a rubber base laid on the existing macadam sub-base followed by a polyurethane and red rubber crumb surface to meet current IAAF specifications.

CLS also reconstructed all the field facilities to ensure they were in line with IAAF specifications. These included the high jump area, pole vault facility, shotput zone, hammer cage, triple jump and sand pits.

As a centre of excellence for athletics, Wavertree Stadium is expected to stage major track and field events. The new surface is seen as a faster one than its predecessor and hopes are high that competition on it will challenge national and international records.

“CLS Sports delivered a high quality and professional service throughout the refurbishment of the Wavertree Athletics Track. They installed a high quality surface and managed the programme effectively, keeping us up to date with progress. I would have no hesitation in recommending CLS to other clients.”
