TEESSIDE UNIVERSITY

3G Pitch Refurbishment

Working to tight urban confinments at a live University, CLS Sports reconstructed Teesside University’s artificial pitch.

Inittially the existing sand filled hockey surface and shockpad were removed and recycled before work on extending two boundaries to accommodate full sized football and American football commenced.

All services for the University’s central hub building ran through the proposed extension area. CLS therefore had to divert all services within this area outside of the new pitch footprint. This required extremely presice excavation and timley communications with all service providers.

Once the base for the new extension was constructed a uniform macadam layer was then installed. Remedial work to the existing macadam layer was also carried out to ensure the final surface tolerances were achieved. An 20mm insitu rubber shockpad was then installed to ensure the final surface had the correct characteritiscs for the intended sports. The 3G synthetic turf was then laid with great precision and the associated sand and rubber infill applied.

As well as the extension, a concrete retaining wall along one side of the pitch was also added to the design by CLS to ensure an exising footpath running down one side of the facility could be retained. To complete this state of the art facility LED floodlights were also installed.

Located in the centre of Middlesbrough along side residential housing and the university buildings meant excellent planning, co-ordination and efficiencies were required.

This project exemplifies CLS Sports unwavering excellence in project delivery, even under challenging and restrictive conditions. Planning, co-ordination, communication and the highest quality of workmanship were all important elements.
